About Me

Hi readers of my blog

I am a forty something mum of three gorgeous children.  Being a mum was really the only thing I wanted out of life.  I never had any career plans, I was just waiting for my knight in shining armour to come and sweep me off my feet and to be a full time mum.

Strangely, it took quite a long time to meet him, and then he was different from what I had imagined, but he was the one.  It didnt take too long before we were married, home owners and parents.

When I had my first child I knew that I was the best mother in the world.  Dan slept, fed, gurgled and was a gorgeous and happy baby and everyone would comment on how lovely he was and what a good mum I was.  It was all because of me.  It never entered my head that I had nothing to do with how awesome he was, it was just that he was the most easy, most perfect baby in the world.  I know that now.

Enter Emma, my miserable, red and scratchy allergy kid.  She didnt sleep. Not at night and hardly during the day.  Everything I thought I was doing right with Dan just didnt work with her.  Slowly I realised that it wasnt me that had been amazing, Dan really was just a chilled out easy baby and now I am paying for that with the worlds most challenging baby.    Of course as her life progressed we realised there were lots of problems with her and with the marvellous view of hindsight, I would have done things very differently, right from the start.

Lastly there was my Sarah bear.  She was born different too.  An easy, routine loving baby unfortunately born with a unilateral cleft lip and palate.  After a year of doctors and surgeries she is all fixed (more or less) and has grown into a cool person, somewhat strong willed and so very bright and scarily like me.

So thats me and mine.  Whilst this blog will focus mostly on Emma and our struggles with her health and finding food she can eat, I'll talk about the others as well and other general family things of interest that come up.

I hope you enjoy reading my blog and I hope it may be of some help to other allergy families in finding new food options and ideas.

Thanks for stopping by.

  1. Hi Barbs. I hope you don't mind, I just linked to your blog on the Allergy NZ facebook group page. There's a whole lot of supportive people on there and someone was asking if there are any other kiwi bloggers. I thought of you.

  2. Hi Barbs,
Thanks for following my blog - I have just had a read of yours and thought I would send you a recipe I used just this morning! It's nutritious, delicious, AND hopefully safe for your beautiful Emma!
It's a recipe for banana bread, but you can use it for muffins - in fact, I made my 11 month old some 'cup cake' size portions this morning - they are the only sweet thing (apart from fruit) I give her, and she loves them! (Her Dad & I enjoyed ours for breakkie too!)
    Blessings,
    Greer.

6 (yes 6!) very ripe bananas
    3/4 c sugar
    1 tsp vanilla
    2c wholemeal flour
    1 tsp bi-carb soda
    1 tsp baking powder
    1 tsp cinnamon

Mash bananas with sugar and vanilla.
Sift dry ingredients in to bowl.
    Mix until just combined.
Pour in to greased loaf tin (or muffin tray).
Bake at 170 degrees C for around 1 hour (less time if making muffins/cup cakes).

Done when skewer comes out clean.
    YUM!! Enjoy :)

(p.s. please note my blogs are now found directly on my website at http://www.greersakul.com/blog.html

    Blessings.

  4. Hi Barb, just found your blog through 'Auckland Bloggers' that Cat (Catalina's Cottage) started... I to have an allergy child (oh, and hubby as well)! She initially tested allergic to the same as Emma, but is fine with egg now; and currently (at 3.5 years) we are just starting to introduce her to nuts. We have had her on dairy since just before two yeaes old, however we now think we have started this too soon and are re-evaluating this; however since then we have discovered she is sensitive to gluten as well (like her Dad)! It has been a challenging few years!
